With the ongoing economic adjustments, headline inflation still hovering around 15.39%, and household purchasing power stretched to its limits, PAYE softening is no longer a luxury policy, it is an economic survival imperative.
My argument for maximizing and accelerating PAYE softening comes down to three fundamental facts:
1. Consumer Spending is the Engine of Recovery:When fixed-income workers lose massive chunks of their pay to taxes, they stop spending on anything other than bare survival. Softening PAYE instantly injects liquid capital back into local markets, driving consumer demand, supporting small businesses, and stimulating the domestic economy from the bottom up.
2. Mitigating “Brain Drain” and Protecting Talent: Nigeria’s skilled workforce (in tech, finance, healthcare, and education) face massive temptation to migrate or shift entirely to remote work for foreign entities, while easing tax squeeze ensures that local employment remains viable and competitive.
3. Aligning Policy with Intent: The frameworks are already written and anchored by structural shifts in the Nigeria Tax Act, although may need tweaks to fully align to economic reality.
These reliefs when aggressively pushed, will lead policy paper to actual payroll execution thereby closing the gap between government intent and the reality in the average citizen’s bank account and disposable income.
PAYE softening policy should ordinarily substitute fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria.
These tax cuts should be available to the average worker in mitigating the harsh economic conditions and hidden taxes.

Taxation is one tool available to government to use in redistributing wealth and in fighting corruption. Let us use it today. The time to act is now.
